St. Francis once said, "Preach the Gospel always...and if necessary, use words."
Even though this was said a long time ago, it is ever relevant today. We are not perfect people and we will make mistakes from time to time. But we must make a more conscious effort to reflect Christ by our actions, instead of relying solely on what we say.
To be a good witness is to live as Christ lived and walk as He walked. Jesus commanded us to "Go and make disciples," not "Go and beat them with the Bible." I have learned, and am continuing to learn, that showing people the love of Christ and helping them to fully understand who He is relies so much on my behavior and little on my words.
Words (i.e. Scripture) become more important later in the discipleship process. But initially, we must meet people where they are and love them as Christ does. Quoting lines and lines of Scripture means very little, but living as Christ lived speaks volumes to people who do not know Him yet.
